Com-X at the Citrix Partner Technical Expert Council 2023 (PTEC)

Citrix Partner Technical Expert Council (PTEC)

Com-X has been working with virtual workplaces provided by Citrix for many years, and we were one of the few Platinum Citrix partners invited from Australia to Citrix PTEC 2023.   Being a Platinum Partner means that we need to keep our knowledge and skills up to date in order to provide our customers with the right advice in a rapidly changing technology environment.

A week ago I was fortunate enough to travel to London on behalf of Com-X to attend the invitation-only Citrix and NetScaler PTEC (Partner Technical Expert Council).  I haven’t been back to London for 12 years, and while some things have certainly changed with London (The Elizabeth line – woohoo!) and Citrix (now part of Cloud Software Group), it was excellent to be on the ground and mixing with technology leaders from Citrix and a select group of partners from across the world.

There were lots of topics covered at PTEC that are under NDA and are off limits for publishing on a blog like this.  But what I can say openly is that despite some upheaval in the Citrix world over the last 12 months, the people and the information shared at the event gave us confidence that the Citrix product stack is in good shape and the roadmap is strong.

The core messages across Citrix and NetScaler were:

  • A doubled down focus on the core:  Secure Application and Desktop Delivery.  Development effort is now being spent where customers want it.

  • Providing an enterprise software infrastructure that scales hugely and is compatible with a long list of platforms (ie, still the “Switzerland” of IT)

  • A focus on making sure the platform has the strongest capabilities and differentiation

Without needing to be invited to PTEC, Citrix provide a quasi roadmap of upcoming and recently released features and functions for the Citrix Cloud platform at https://updates.cloud.com/.  That site shows items that are now available, releasing, in preview, or in development.

Over the last 3 or 4 years, some Citrix customers have felt that their on-premises functionality was starting to look tired and falling behind those services and functions available in Citrix Cloud.  This was essentially by design – Citrix was pushing customers to adopt their Cloud Services and move away from on-premises deployments. While this was fine for lots of companies and the Citrix Cloud offering is good, the attempt to force customers into Citrix cloud didn’t or couldn’t really work for many customers – for many reasons that are specific to each customer’s business needs.

However, now that Citrix is doubling down on their core, much of the functionality of Citrix Cloud is quickly becoming available to on-premises customers as well.  A few examples of Citrix Cloud features that are already in the latest releases of on-premises Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops includes:

With the NDA roadmap shared at PTEC, and these core features that have already been released this year, on-premises Citrix deployments can be quickly modernised from an administrator and end user experience perspective.  The virtual workplaces that these tools power have become even more robust and feature rich and valuable to our customers.

Aside from the encouraging roadmap and technical updates about the new and upcoming features with Citrix and NetScaler, PTEC 2023 in London was an excellent event, and provided a chance to reacquaint with old friends and make some new friends from across the Citrix product management and partner ecosystem.  We were able to pick up lots of advice, with examples from real world scenarios that we can take home and use to benefit our customers in Australia.

While the return flights were long from Sydney for less than 5 days on the ground in London, the knowledge transfer and experience with Citrix PTEC 2023 made the trip certainly worthwhile for Com-X and our customers. And we look forward to attending the next one as a leading Citrix and NetScaler Platinum Partner.
